How to use CANAC small animal bedding
The floor of a hutch or cage should be covered with woodshavings to a depth of 3 - 6cms (1 – 2 inches) to make a comfortable, soft and absorbent carpet (chopped straw can be used instead for rabbits).
For rabbits & guinea pigs a generous supply of hay should then be placed in one corner of the hutch for nesting. It also makes a tasty treat. Make sure that any hay or straw used with pets is chopped for their safety. Long strands of hay and straw are potentially life threatening and can wrap tight around legs, cutting off the circulation.
Alternatively for hamsters, gerbils & mice sawdust makes ideal bedding. The floor of the cage should be covered with sawdust to a depth of 3 - 6cms (1 – 2 inches) to make a comfortable, soft and absorbent carpet.
DO NOT use hay for hamster or gerbil bedding – it can damage their food pouches inside their mouths. Use a natural nesting material specially made for hamsters & gerbils.
It is also recommended that all bedding should have been dust-extracted as this reduces irritation to the eyes, nose and respiratory system.
Which bedding is best for my pet?

Caring for your pet & his home
Soiled bedding should be removed daily from your pet’s hutch or cage and replaced with fresh bedding. The hutch or cage should be thoroughly cleaned out at least once a week and rinsed with warm water and a hutch and cage disinfectant. Allow to dry before replacing with fresh bedding. Discarded bedding can be used as compost or disposed of with household rubbish.
Remember to clean feeding bowls and water bottles daily.
Keeping your pet healthy
Good nutrition and housing are key to keeping a healthy pet. Avoid sudden changes in diet and temperature. Position pet hutches and cages out of draughts. Ensure that your pet has the opportunity to exercise on a daily basis. Always keep bedding clean and dry. If your pet looks unwell, contact your vet.
